Morgan Freeman Accused of Sexual Harassment by Eight #MeToo Women

Another Hollywood harassment scandal is in headlines after several women accused one of the most celebrated actors in the film industry Morgan Freeman.

A survey has found that 94% of women employed in the American film industry have experienced sexual harassment or assault. There are many #MeToo stories from almost every corner of the world which have shocked the film industry. Here is another proof of that.

Morgan Freeman Accused of Sexual Harassment by Eight #MeToo Women

Freeman is the latest high profile entertainment figure to be accused of mistreating women since the #MeToo movement began. He won an Oscar for best supporting actor in 2005 for his role in “Million Dollar Baby” and has been nominated for four other Academy Awards.

According to a brief report by CNN, one production assistant accused Freeman of harassing her for months during filming of bank robbery comedy “Going in Style.” She said the 80-year-old touched her repeatedly, tried to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear.

Freeman would routinely comment on her physical appearance and that of her assistant, said a woman described as a senior member of the production staff of 2013 movie “Now You See Me.”

CNN reporter Chloe Mela Accused Morgan Freeman

CNN reporter Chloe Melas said that, during an interview last year about “Going in Style,” when she was six months pregnant, Freeman looked her up and down and told her, “You are ripe.” A camera caught Freeman saying “Boy, do I wish I was there,” directed toward Ms. Melas.

“Right when I walked into the room, he began to make sexually suggestive comments to me,” Ms. Melas, one of the authors of the CNN report, said on air Thursday. “As an entertainment reporter for over a decade, it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.”

Alan Arkin, a co-star on the film, reportedly told Freeman to stop. “Morgan got freaked out and didn’t know what to say,” the accuser, who chose to remain anonymous, added.

Other victims claim he touched them without permission, made vulgar comments toward them and commented on their clothing and bodies. Robin Hood star is also said to have stared at women’s breasts and asked women to twirl for him. CNN also said it had spoken to dozens more people who worked with or for Mr Freeman, some of whom praised Freeman and insisted his behaviour was always professional.

Another reporter, Tyra Martin of Chicago’s WGN-TV, says that on several occasions where she interviewed Freeman he remarked on her appearance. “When I stood up, I pulled my skirt, part of my dress down, and he did say, ‘Oh, don’t pull it down now.’” Martin told CNN. “That gave me pause but I never felt uncomfortable.”

Morgan Freeman Apologised

Freeman apologised to “anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected”.

“Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy,” he said in a statement.

‘SAG-AFTRA is also investigating the allegations’

Actors union SAG-AFTRA is also investigating the allegations. Freeman was awarded a life achievement award last year.

“These are compelling and devastating allegations which are absolutely contrary to all the steps that we are taking to insure a safe work environment for the professionals in this industry,” a spokesperson said. “Any accused person has the right to due process, but it is our starting point to believe the courageous voices who come forward to report incidents of harassment. Given Mr. Freeman recently received one of our union’s most prestigious honors recognizing his body of work, we are therefore reviewing what corrective actions may be warranted at this time.”
